Trying to weld an 8 inch c-purling to a 3.5 inch pipe. I am using 1/8 6011s and have my Miller set pretty hot but I can't get a good puddle started. Everytime I start the weld, the purling side seems to repel the puddle. I finally got it done, but it really looks crappy. Any ideas what I should have done? Oh, its an overhead weld. :wall:

Turn your heat down, make sure what you are welding is clean, hold rod holder with both hands. When you see your puddle starting start moving, don't stay in one spot to long. You don't want a lot of heat on a over head weld and you don't want any wide gaps to fill up. If you see it starting to drip down stop, clean it up and start again. Hope this helps.

Hello,
If the purlin has been galvanized the welding will be slightly more difficult. 6011 is a good choice.
When welding overhead use the same techniques as welding flat. A shorter arc may help minimize the the issue with the arc wandering. Overhead sometimes causes people to stop paying attention to what is going on at the puddle and they concentrate more on getting out from the falling fire. Use a welding hat, leathers or other welding jacket.
Hope this helps some and have a nice day.
