Moved into a new house a few months ago. The heat pump worked fine in AC mode, kicked it over to heat a couple of weeks ago for a night and it appeared to be working. Warmed back up outside so we shut it down and opened the windows. Now that it's dipping into the 40's at night we wanted to kick it back on. Everything inside runs, but the compressor outside doesn't seem to run. I thought maybe the compressor shot craps, so I flipped the system back to AC and adjusted the thermostat. The outside unit fired right up. I did check the fluid line one night and it seemed hot to the touch, but every time since then, it's been room temperature. Any suggestions or is it time to call someone in?

Balancing the system is what you need to do.Get a tech to adjust the refrigerant(balance) according to the manufacturer specs.

Indeed have the charge checked.

Didn't your Home Inspector check the Heat Pump?

With outdoor unit not coming on in heat, could also be the tstat or defrost board in the unit.
