I have ordered a 40-zone HAI Omni IIe system. I have specified that RFI is a serious concern and specified that shielded wire be used. The system is currently being installed, shielded wire is being used, but the installer says there are no provisions in the controller cabinet to ground the shields!

It is my understanding that for RFI protection grounded shields are required. Is it appropriate that the installer just let them float ungrounded? This system is being installed in a high RF environment (kilowatt transmitters within the building, antennas just outside) and RFI protection is a concern I have raised with the installing company from the beginning.

Are my worries unfounded and are ungrounded shields appropriate??

Thanks for any and all insight.

Unless the Omni panel specs shielded wire, then yes, shielded wire is a bit overkill. In fact many security systems specify _non-shielded_ wire because the shielded stuff has impedence issues.

You are saying you have a high RF environment, but I suspect that the floating shield will be enough. Security systems aren't really that sensitive.

I appreciate the encouragement. We had RFI problems with our PBX and I was trying to be pro-active with the security system.

I'll check back in if we have any problems.
