When you open lid is the basket leaning to one side? These machine had a problem with the springs and snubber.

Sometimes if only a few heavy soaked items are in a washer, they go to one side and gets out of balance easy, and you have to redistribute in the spin cycle to stop that. Not that this is your case, but worth keeping in mind.
MY washing machine sounds like it could wake up the dead, from this effect, but is still running strong after 23 or 4 years.

that's heartening news...i'll double check on the load imbalance and I'll quit putting so many towels in at once...the washer is noisey only during the wash cycle. thanks for your input

It's not really the number, but how they are distributed. It's actually easier for it to be unbalance with less in there.
Let us know if that is or isn't it. it's the fact you mentioned towels. These can be so heavy when they are spinning out.

I would guess that you have a transmission going out. Not to much in there to make noise in agit.
