My GE Heavy Duty Extra Large washer just died. We turned it on. It started to fill than stopped. I checked to see it was off balance, etc. Turned it on again. All I get is a very, very faint humm. What might be the problem?

It a GE heavy Duty Extra Large Capacity 5 cycle top load washer.

If you are running it on cold wash, try warm wash to see if it fills more then, so you'd know it might be a big load of sand/rust got up the water line and is blocking the fill valve inlet screen.

When the water shut off, does the water level ever make it as high as it should? Very imprortant to know that. If not, my first paragraph statement would apply. If it DOES fill to the top to where the water level is set at, then the first paragraph statement would NOT apply.

But if it DID fill up all the way - if you had the water level set at a lower setting, now try setting it to max and see if more water goes in.

If the water level is to where it should be shutting off, then it sounds like something in the machine is locking up, since you have that hum. Unless of course if the hum is coming from the water fill valve still TRYING to fill with water(but can't get in).
