Our kitchen with dinette area and family room are all connected. On one wall in particular there is a fireplace, then a sliding glass door, and then kitchen cabinets. I really, really want to paint the kitchen one color and the dinette and family room another color. On one side of the kitchen there is an easy paint break because there is a half wall, so the paint can stop/start at the corner. However, on the wall described above there is no natural break. Should I just stop one paint color and start the other mid-wall? Should I stop the kitchen color flush where the cabinet and counter end? I've even thought about adding a piece of decorative molding the whole height of the wall between the kitchen and sliding door to create an actual break, but I'm not sure it would look good. The space between the slider and the kitchen cabinets is only about 8-10 inches. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you cabinets are like mine you'll have a microwave or something near the end. Changing the paint at the end of the upper & lower cabinets or at the top of the header on the slider would work.

Shared walls are painted the same color. For instance, a wall shared by the kitchen and dining area is painted one color. A wall shared by dining and living areas is painted the same color. Other walls can be painted a different color to define distinction of the two areas, but the shared wall color provides continuity and unification of shared areas.

Traditionaly the color changing wall should have a break in it to make it look its best.
