I have a deck several years old which have full 6x6 cedar posts. Most are splitting; a few are splitting quite a bit. I am afraid that as water freezes and thaws the splits will get worse. I am considering copper caps.

In addition I am considering colored caulking to fill the worst cracks because it is more flexible as the cedar expands, contracts. I am thinking not to use wood filler for that same reason, plus I don't want to restain/reseal again right away.

Has anyone had experience with splits in Cedar fence posts (which I understand is common) and what worked for you?
