Doing a load of laundry this evening and all kinds of noise starts during the end of the spin cycle. Whack-whack-whack.

From looking around this forum, it sounds like the rear bearing is shot. Removed the top; the springs and shocks look ok. Haven't taken the back panel off (will get going tomorrow morning) yet to see if anything is obviously shot.

Looking here:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/retrieveModelActionHome!retrieve.action?pop=true&modelNumber=417.40042990&pop=flush

to find which parts I need to get this thing running again.

Help appreciated.

Thanks.

You have a major job. Needs rear shell and basket, (basket usually has lifetime warranty from Frigidaire), Also while you are there change the door boot. There is a new style that works better. Job takes 2 of us 2 1/2 hours. Look in tub and you will need parts 8 boot,16 basket, 22 Shell and sometimes 26 pulley. I have had a few that the pulley has frozen on the shaft. Remember to change the fins in the basket the new basket dose not come with them. Reason for 2 men is basket assy is very heavy with counterweights on it.

Thanks! Getting things apart now, and documenting with photos and notes as I go (mostly so I remember how it all goes back together...). Should have most of the disassembly done before lunch.

Are there other wear items that should be replaced while I've got the thing apart? Shocks? Springs? Belt?

This unit is 8 years old, but the interior looks pretty good. No leaks, etc. The belt in particular is in surprisingly good shape.

Thanks again.

I also found a sort of step-by-step guide for what sounds like a similar model:

Some details different, but it should help.

Well, this ain't so bad. Just takes some time. Got the machine apart.

Thanks for the heads up on the pulley. Rigged up a gear-puller and it popped right off.

The "whack-whack-whack" sound was coming from a quarter-sized piece of a spin basket arm that cracked off and was hurling around. Two of the three spin basket arms were cracked, and the assembly is pretty rotted out. I got all the spin basket arm screws out (6 of them, 10mm). One snapped.

The spin basket itself is in fine shape.

Question: is the whole basket assembly (tub and spin arm/shaft) included in the warranty item? I only need the assembly and some new screws. Also, I don't see a part number for the spin arms and bolts (despite the nice zoomed in pic on the parts diagram). So I guess the tub/arms/shaft is one part.

[EDIT: Called the warranty dept at Sears. Apparently there is no lifetime warranty on the tub/spin (part 131618500) basket. Unless, a service tech comes out, verifies the problem, agrees that the part is warranteed, etc. etc. So much for saving any money on a DIY job. Looks like I have to order a new one.]

Will order the rear tub/seal today.

Thanks pugsl.

Only parts you should have to replace is the parts mentioned earlier. If shocks are not broken they should be ok.

Cool. Got the parts ordered, and everything is ready to reassemble when they arrive.

Thanks again.
