Painting - painting over stained cabinets

Hi,

I have an old ugly cabinet in my bathroom that I can't afford to replace, so I'd like to paint it to match the rest of the stuff in the bathroom. The cabinet is stained right now. As I understand it, I need to sand the the cabinet until it is no longer glossy, prime, and then paint? I just want to make sure I do this properly. Thanks for any advice.

Yes but the primer needs to be solvent based [shellac or oil base] latex primer's don't adhere well enough to go over varnish/poly.

I'd recomend using a waterborne enamel. They dry almost as hard as oil base enamel but lighter colors won't yellow like oil base tends to do. If you do use latex enamel - make sure it is a good brand/line, some of the cheaper latex enamels don't wear well :eek:
