And I did not loose any fingers, or nailed myself!. The nail gun worked great and came in handy when your doing this with no help.
I ended up using 2*8s for the structure. with 6*6 posts. the beams are 5 feet between posts, bolted with 2- 3/8" bolts on each post . and the joists span 9 feet between the beams, 16" on center. Its 32 feet by 14 feet, and the 'L' sticks out another 6 feet (20 feet in total).- You dont realize how heavy a 20 foot 2*8 weighs then attaching it to a post 20 feet in the air! You come up with some creative ideas when doing things youself!
I plan to enclose under the part sticking out, and make that a storage area for rafts, water toys, etc.
The railing is 2*6, with 4*4 posts which I bolted to the INSIDE of the joists ( cutting out the decking). I figured that is stronger then bolting to the outside. I don't want anyone falling, thats a 20 foot drop! :eek:
For the spindles, I bought a drill press and drilled 1/4" holes into 2*4s on edge. and created each section individually, screwing the entire section into place. far cheaper then buying the spindle connectors!
And of course, now that its done, the Wife gets the complements from the boats passing by!
Well, now I wish I could sit on the lounger and relax Beer 4U2 , but now the Boss want it all stained :wall:
Maybe I should buy a spray gun!
Never fails! you prove you can do something yourself, and SHE only demands more. :(
