I was running a small load of two rope scatters rugs 24" x 15" and two shear window cafe curtains with a low water level.
When I started the machine the agitator engaged but made a grinding noise. I turned off the machine, removed the rugs, turned it back on, it goaned and the agitator wouldn't turn. I tried advancing to other cycles -- drain or spin, but these cyles would not work. I had to remove the water by using a shop vac.
The unit is: Kenmore Heavy Duty 60 Series, Model #110.92060110 Serial #CA1517602 Stock #20601.
Do you think it's a major fix or could something, maybe unrelated, had gotten caught in the pump. If that's the case, could it be removed by removing the agitator, and if so, can you please give me instructions as to how to remove it. If you don't think that's the trouble, can you please give me an idea of what it might be, and if it can be done by us or only a repairman. If a repairman, would the cost be exhorbitant.
Many thanks for your help!

Hi,
Yesterday finally got around to tackling the washing machine.
I first tried to manually move the agitator -- it moved slightly to the left and then to the right and the tub moved freely. After a couple of tries, the agitator froze, and now does not move at all.
I then started the machine, it now pumps out the water, but the agitator doesn't move and it doesn't spin, but I hear the motor running. I took off the agitator to see if something might be stuck underneath, and all seemed okay except that one of the holes at the bottom of the column is somewhat rusted and a little larger than the others. The holes seemed to be clear.
Before I order the coupler, would a broken drive coupler prevent the agitator from moving? Do you think it might be the transmission? The last time I used it (when the agitator came to a grinding halt) I found some black marks on the my curtains.
I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much!!

All your symtoms point to broken drive coupler. No need to take off agitator. I don't even take off cabinet just tilt machine back to wall and work from under it. Takes about 15 minutes.

That's great news!!!! I'm also glad that I don't have to remove the cabinet. I'll buy the part tomorrow. Thank you very much for your help!!
