I was running a small load of two rope scatters rugs 24" x 15" and two shear window cafe curtains with a low water level.
When I started the machine the agitator engaged but made a grinding noise. I turned off the machine, removed the rugs, turned it back on, it goaned and the agitator wouldn't turn. I tried advancing to other cycles -- drain or spin, but these cyles would not work. I had to remove the water by using a shop vac.

The unit is: Kenmore Heavy Duty 60 Series, Model #110.92060110 Serial #CA1517602 Stock #20601.

Do you think it's a major fix or could something, maybe unrelated, had gotten caught in the pump. If that's the case, could it be removed by removing the agitator, and if so, can you please give me instructions as to how to remove it. If you don't think that's the trouble, can you please give me an idea of what it might be, and if it can be done by us or only a repairman. If a repairman, would the cost be exhorbitant.

Many thanks for your help!
