Hi, I have a kenmore upright freezer that is not freezing like it normally does. The model is 253.9260212 and we had it for ten years now. It still runs, just not getting cold enough to freeze the food. My husband check the temperature control and the evaporator fan motor; they both seems to work properly so he doesn't know what else he can check to see why it's not freezing. Could it be needing more freon? Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Does this model self defrost?
From strictly diagnosing on a refrigeration basis, not knowing your unit - if the compressor runs and sounds like it use to, and the evaporator fan is running -
Then you also have to make sure that if there is a condensor fan (fan that is down by the compressor and hot coils) that it too is running, and that the hot coils are clean, and that since you have an evaporator fan, that means you have a compartment that lets in air and that vent should not be froze shut. And if it does defrost, you have to make sure that melted ice water has not backed up and refroze in where the evaporator cold coils are located. And if there is a light bulb inside that it is not on when you close the door.
Only after all these things I mentioned (if they all apply) can be scratched off the list, that then you can assume it is low on freon.

If it has an evaporator fan, it must be a self defrosting unit. Set the temp control to max, remove the inside back panel of the freezer, disconnect the fan there, and check out the evaporator coils, if you don't have a complete frost pattern on those coils after the compressor has run 1 hour, you have a "freon" leak, or weak compressor. If when you remove the panel the coils have a very heavy frost over all the coils, you have a self defrost problem, and is an easy fix.
