I have a forced air furnace with registers with natural gas and central air. The a/c stopped coming on and now the heat won't come on. Is this related and where do I begin troubleshooting. I have small children in a 55 degree home...please help!

That the thermostat is not set to "off".

That the furnace breaker is not tripped. To be sure, flip it off first, then on.

That the switch on side of furnace did not get turned off by kids playing.

That any gas valve did not get turned off, inside or outside the house, including the meter, and gas valve on the pipe that supplies the furnace and is located often on the side of the furnace on the pipe leading to the gas control valve that is inside the furnace itself. Any inline valve will be correctly "on" if the raised part of the valve is in the same direction the pipe goes (as opposed to crossing it, as that means it is "off").

If you have 120 volts entering the furnace.

That you have 24 volts at the transformer inside.

That your thermostat works. (You can jumper wire between terminal R and W on the low voltage terminal board inside the furnace, to find out. If the furnace say were to run, then you have something wrong with the thermostat (is it digital, with batteries, or mechanical thermostat?), or the thermostat wires has a break in it, or bad connection in stat.
.............................................
None of the above (electrical checks)needs to be checked (but still check the gas valves) if when you turn on the thermostat, that you hear any kind of blower motor running in the furnace. IF you hear one, turn off the furnace switch or breaker, let it sit for 15-30 seconds, then turn the furnace back on and see what happens.
