Hello,

I got a leftover gallon of Cabot stain from my contractor with the following information on it:
AXN-4.8, B2Y37.5, C-19, KX-1Y34

I wanted to get an other gallon and went to Lowes to get the same (they carry Cabot). They told me that the numbering scheme used was not the same they use and that could not do anything for me...

Does anybody know if there is a way to translate the color scheme from one system to another? I would have thought that that stuff was standardized.

Thx.

Couldn't you ask your contractor where he purchaced the stain?

You might have better luck going to a real paint store. It is hard to find help with much paint experience at any paint "dept". Even if they [paint store] don't carry the same stain, they should be able to match it with one of their coatings.

Cabot works with various retailers and companies to convert tinting it's products with that particular retailers tinting system for other brands, usually their in house brands.I work for Ace hardware and we use a similar tinting system to what yours was tinted with.

The number before the "y" is some of the tints is how many full ounces of tint. The number after as well as the numbers with no Y are how many fractions of an ounce. The unanswered question is what fraction of an ounce. With Ace it's 48ths of an ounce.

The letters for each tint are designations for a particular color of tint. These can vary from system to system.

I somewhat understand the Lowe's employee's trouble as it is not a matching of another brand it's a matching of the same product made elsewhere with a different system.

I agree that you should try to go to at least the same retailer where you got the cabot before. If that isn't possible for whatever reason you at least need to know how the original formula is calculated.
