Blows white smoke under load especially when going across a hill with the left on the down side. Smoke stops when load removed. I think it could be the head gasket. Mower has done 600+ hours,

Blown head gasket is a real possibility, also check and make sure oil level is right and not overfull.

Your problem could be as simple as too much oil or a more serious problem such as cylinder wear or blown head gasket. There are two tests than should confirm the cause.
The first is a vacuum test using simple water manometer and the other is a leakdown test.
You can purchase a leakdown tester or make your own. Here are links that explain both.
