OK, so I am painting my 1 1/2 story house... almost done except for the sides of the second story. I am standing on the roof and getting as much as I can, but am stuck when it comes to getting the peak, as well as the soffet and fascia.

The roof is an 8/12 pitch. Is a ladder with leg levelers an option? Or is there some type of scaffolding that I can put on the roof? I have considered renting a lift, but that's a pretty expensive option.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forums!

"How to paint second story from roof" - very carefully :p :D

There are several different ways to reach it. Not all jobs are the same so the method used can vary.

I've used a ladder with either a leg extensions or setting on something to allow the ladder to set level - it is almost always best to have a helper to hold the ladder steady when going this route.

Another option is a walk board from the roof to an extension ladder. Again care must be used so the walkboard won't slip and the ladder won't move.

You can also use a brush extension along with a roller pole to paint areas out of reach. I have laid down on the roof and reached over to paint the fascia. A lot depends on the house and what you have to work with.

Thanks for the reply. Love the forum.

Are walk boards something that are available for rent? What's to keep a ladder, even with extensions, from sliding down the roof? The pitch is pretty steep...

Getting somebody on the roof with me might be the challenge...as I seem to be the only person in my family or small neighborhood willing to get up on a roof.

Another related Q....how can I minimize the scuffing of my shingles from me being on the roof? I am wearing rubber-soled sneakers and try to minimize my movement and shuffling around, but I still am seeing areas--usually on the edges of the shingles--where the aggregate is being knocked off.

Thanks again.

Mike

Thanks for the pic - they almost always help

At the peak of the garage roof you can use a ladder straddling each side. The rest will be more challenging. The way you would use a walk board would be to set up and extension ladder and run the walk board from the roof to the top of the ladder. It is best to have someone on the ladder to steady it while you work off of the walkboard. This will be difficult to do without damaging the gutter. You may need to figure out a way to support the ladder so it won't crush the gutter. Aluminum walk boards can be rented but for short runs a 2x12 works fine.

Most shingle damage will occur when the roof is hot although it is also possible to damage shingles when they are fairly cold and brittle. The less movement the better - I know easier said than done  :D

Go to a paint store and tell them you want a brush holder that screws onto a roller pole. The brush clamps onto the holder and then you posistion it at the right angle and screw it onto the right size roller pole. The longer the pole is extended the harder it is to control. They are a little awkward to use but the extra reach really helps!
