Our Philips Rear-projection HDTV is acting up. At the bottom of the screen it is showing the colors green and red. Any writing at the bottom is also this color and looks almost 3-D. Anyone have an idea what this is? If so, if we can find out what it is and get the parts, are the parts expensive? The TV is only 4 years old.
Thanks so much.

Sounds like convergence IC's.
Requires desoldering and soldering on the new chips.
Part #- STK392-120's about $15-30 a piece (2ea)
Technician would charge $250-300 for the repair typically.

After removing the back casing, and looking from the back, the IC's will be on a circuit board in the lower right hand corner. They will be against heat sinks. You normally have to unplug some connectors and slide the board out and prop it up so you can desolder and solder.

Mark,
Thanks so much for the response. Is there a diagram somewhere that shows all of this?

I replaced both IC's and 4 resistors and while the red & green coloring is gone, the whole picture now looks 3-D? Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Have you tried going in the menu and using the convergence adjustments?

Having a hard time getting the red & green to line up perfectly on the convergence. Are all of the "crosses" supposed to line up exactly?

Go into the convergence menu and reset everything to default, then go back in and adjust. It may take a few minutes for the set to warm up.
Did you follow these directions on page 8?

I know I saw earlier today where to reset to default in the convergence but now I can't find it. Can someone tell me where it is? Thanks so much.

The top and bottom 2 rows are slightly bowed and I can't get the colors to align. Does this sound as if I may having something touching that shouldn't be?

Inspect your convergence IC's to make sure the solder hasn't rolled over bridging another connection.
Did you replace both the IC's?
I found a step by step. Look at this and see if this is what you accomplished.

Thanks for this information, this is very helpful. Will look at it tonight and see if I can figure out what I may have done. Yes, both IC's were replaced.
This is a great site.

Thanks for the information! I was able to purchase the IC's off of eBay for about $15.00 and now the TV's working great; I even took the time to adjust the internal focusing so now the picture is crisp and clean especially when viewed in 1080i HD!
As an alternative note, I used several different colored Sharpe pens to mark the board and the connectors which made it really easy to match what went where; this was a lot easier than trying to place tape markers on the board and cables.

Hey all,
I really appreciate all the information. I was able to repair my tv with your help. After replacing the convergence ic's it works fine except that I don't get an on screen menu. I was able to get tv in focus using internal controls. Any idea was the problem is? I'm thinking that maybe there is a loose conection. I think that I got everything put back together. Appreciate any help.
