Hello,
I have a 2000 Yamaha Big Bear 400. It has been sitting up for about 5 months. I bought a new battery and placed it in the bike to crank it. Since it had been sitting up for a while it took a while to get it to crank. After getting it cranked, I had to have the choke open to get it to run. After approximately 6 to 10 minutes I looked down and saw smoke coming off the exhuast pipe. The pipe was also glowing red. I turned the bike off and recranked it after it had cooled and the pipe again glowed red. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this? Plus, can you advise me on how to fix the problem. Thank you for ANY help!

Your engine is running way lean. That causes the engine to run very hot and is causing the pipe to heat and glow.
First try adjusting the fuel mix to give more gas vs air to the engine. If that doesn't cure it, you probably need to clean and rebuild the carb.

no it is running way to rich that is fuel burning in the exhaust that is causing the muffler to overheat., the post was haveing to run with the choke open. you will need to check the float for fuel weighting it down or needle and seat leaking. most likely will need a carb rebuild.

Here is a quick check. Pull your spark plug. If it is white and maybe kind of chalky, you are running lean. If it is black with fluffy or sooty deposits, and maybe even wet, you are running rich.

You are going to need to rebuild the carb. The high speed jet is stopped up. A motor that runs that hot is running lean. A lean motor will run hotter than it should, and before too long you will start burning the piston. I know this because it just happen to me.
I have a nice piston someone can use for a paper weight...lol
