magic chef gas stove has two top pilots and one is higher than the other causing black sut under lid which creates a smell and I contantly have to clean. What can I do to rid this problem?

From the tip of the pilot follow the tubing and look for a screw adjustment. Some have an adjust screw for each pilot. Some use one screw adjust for 2 or 4 top pilots. You have 2 pilots and if only one adjust is present, that means the smaller pilot is partialy plugged, thus more gas going to higher pilot. We use a "piano wire" to clear the blockage. However sometimes you just have to replace the entire assembly.
