This evening I got home and the garage door would not shut. It began to shut then the motor sounded as if it was still trying to shut it, but the chain drive was not doing a thing. This happened in both directions. I have a LiftMaster 1260LM opener and am curious if it's more than likely just a gear kit needed to correct this, if what I've described happening is even enough to come to that conclusion. With the motor running, I was able to assist the chain in moving either direction desired, but once I released the chain by hand, it quit moving. I don't know when it was installed as it was in the home when we purchased it 5 1/2 years ago. Any thoughts?

Yes, it sounds like a the internal gear needs to be replaced. There should also be a manufacture date on the back of the garage door opener, if you are interested.

Check your garage door to make sure that it is balanced properly so you don't end up replacing the gear again in the near future.
