my shelf unit is made of particle board with a real wood veneer. It was dropped during our move and one of the side support beams split at the bottom. How do I fix this? Do I glue it, clamp it until the glue dries? Or do I need to put screws in to anchor it more firmly?

Particle board is hard to repair. More screws usually make things worse. Your glue/clamp suggestion is likely the best, but no guarantees.
