I am trying to find the best way to age the wood on my stairs that lead to my basement. They are pine 2X10s and I was wanting to make them look old and beat up. I was thinking to beat them with a chain and possibly stain or paint them but there has to be more to it than this. If any one has any suggestions I would really appreciate it. THANKS!

If you hit the pine with a chain do it gently to keep it from splintering at the impact zone. If that is the look you want, then you have it in a nutshell. Not rocket science.

Get a dog (claws) or have kids (toys).
Either will age your stairs in no time.:dogrun:

Pine is extremely soft, you can "age" it with anything.
Type some piee of metal to your shoes and walk up and down the steps a few times. That outght to get you some decent dents and dings.
