I am getting ready to install replacement windows in my 1950 home. What kind of insulation should I put in the cavity where the window weights were. Also, what is the best way to fill the cavity? I thought about using low expansion foam and drilling a few holes in the window frame so I can squirt it through.
What's the best/easiest way to insulate this area?

The easiest way is to poke fiberglass insulation up thru the weight holes. Try not to compress it too much, that makes it useless. I might suggest expanding foam, but that takes care. Too much and it will push the window frames apart, too little and the space is not filled. The cavity is too large for non expanding foam, would cost a small fortune(compared to fiberglass) to fill it.
