I built a pergola in march and it looks to have weathered enough to stain. The only thing I'm not thrilled about is the cracks that developed in the posts from the wood shrinking. I'll be staining it white so they will show quite a bit. Is it worth it to fill them?? Will the filler hold up through the seasons or just crumble and fall out from wood movement?? thanks

Dogs bark and wood checks. It's just normal. You can fill the cracks, but in time it may not look uniform. Use something like Minwax epoxy wood filler. After mixing, you will have about 15 minutes of working time, so mix up only what you can use in that time. Don't worry about getting it smooth until it hardens, then rasp and sand smooth.

I usually fill them with caulking when using a light colored solid stain. it won't make them disappear but the caulk does a good job of staying in the crack since it's somewhat fleaxable.
