got kind of a screwy deal here. My relatives have dish network and it goes from the dish, to the reciever in the living room, down to a splitter, and from there to every room of the house (including back to the living room). Their regular antenna also connects to this splitter and serves the whole house, Dish comes in on channel 4. Now, with the switch over, they need the dtv converters to watch the local channels. If you simply hook the box up at the tv and set it to channel 3, the local channels come in on tv channel 3, but the Dish doesn't work on tv channel 4 with the box in line. I'm kind of stumped on this one :)

I need a little more info. How many dish recievers do the have going to how many rooms?
From your post it sounds like they have only 1 reciever going to several rooms.Meaning every room would be watching the same channel on dish.
What you might try is setting the dtv box to channel 4 and leave the tv on channel 3.

Depending on which Dish receiver they have, you can change the channel on which it outputs its signal. It's in the System Setup menu.

it is just the one reciever, it outputs to channel 4, but the dtv box can output to channel 3 or 4, so are you guys kind of thinking maybe they both need to output to channel 4?

Get DTV convertors that have analog pass through, or split the coax from the wall to the box and the TV tuner, and A/V from the box to A/V on the TV.

They can't both be set to channel 4. Even having one on 3 and the other on 4 isn't a good idea. The modulators are not "tight" enough to stay within the bandwidth of the output channel, and they cause interference with each other.

Much better to take classicsat's advice: Put one on the TV's F connector input and the other on its A/V inputs.
