We are in the process of getting bids for refinishing our entire first floor hardwood (maple). It is approximately 2500 sq. ft. Both estimators are recommending the removal and replacement of the baseboard. We do not have quarter round and do not want to add it. Is the removal of baseboard a common practice and is it necessary? I thought that was the purpose of the edge sander. Please advise.

If the current baseboards are in decent shape, you can just reuse them.

Having them removed during sanding is up to you. I personally would remove them to prevent damage and to make sure the entire edge is sanded and refinished. You could save some money and remove them yourself if you wanted, it is not that difficult.
