I have wood louvered bi-fold closet doors. I'd like to remove the wood louvers to put in mirror and glass instead. I'm thinking of either glass or plexi-glass.

Any ideas of how to do this myself? I don't have much experience but am willing to plunge ahead! What are the pros and cons of glass versus plexi-glass?

Thanks, Kathy

Big blue or big orange both carry mirror doors that should easily replace your existing doors.

Actually, I don't care for those so much; I'd rather use mine that would still have the wood frame exposed. Plus I'm on a budget.

Any other ideas?

I doubt your wooden bi-folds would support the glass.

Unless they are very solidly built, I have to agree that the doors will sag from the added weight. They may even pull apart joints or hinges.

Sliders would work better if they had good solid rollers.

That said, could you possibly just put mirror over the louvers? A glass shop might be able to help, but I think they will want you to use safety backed mirror, which will be thicker and heavier. And not inexpensive.

Plexi for that large an area would be pretty expensive as well. It would also collect dust due to static, and you have to be careful to clean it correctly or it will scratch up pretty bad.

Sorry, just giving you the facts as I know them.

I hadn’t thought about mirror over the louvers; I’ll have to look more closely to see if there’s room. Maybe there will be if I use 1/8”. The largest panel would be about 10” x 4’ and the smaller about 10” x 2’. There is two of each size per door so the 1/8” would be better for the weight issue too.

I did speak to the glass shop about safety glass backing but I don’t remember if we talked about it for the 1/8”.

I didn’t know about plexi collecting more dust. That takes it out of the running for sure!

Back to the glass shop tomorrow! Thanks a lot for your help.
