hello , need advice on adding roof over existing deck , it is 8' off the ground ,8' wide & 40' long . i have 4x6 post every 12' with 1 2x10 bolted on ea. side, 2x6 joist 16 o.c . contractor wants to add a 4x6 post between existing 4x6's ,i'm thinking this won't look very good, to many post . i'm wanting to add a roof over this deck, would like ideas . thanks in advance, jim

He probably wants to add the posts for needed support. That's if the posts are going to go all the way to the ground.

You'll either have to add posts or a laminated beam to carry the load of the roof. 12' is too great a span for that.
