Oak cabinets that were finished with Urethane / Verathane 20 yrs ago. Doors & drawers didn't have knobs or handles. So now the finish is getting thin, dirty and sticky.
What should I use to remove the dirt, gunk before painting?

Most any household detergent show clean up most of it. Be sure to rinse well! If detergent isn't effective, you might try paint thinner or even liquid deglosser.

Use paint thinner/mineral spirits to remove kitchen grease and finger oils etc.TSP or other detergent products are used for general cleaning and prep.Deglosser,a last resort,is used to soften underlying surfaces to enhance bonding of product being applied.
If any gloss is still present, lightly scuff sanding may also help.Be sure to remove any grit from sanding.Rinse well any residues from cleaning products.Mineral spirits will evaporate.TSP or other powdered products can leave particles if not well mixed.
