If it is just a few steps, there are prefabricated stringers available. You can also buy one of them and use it as a template if you have to go higher.

Search google for stair building calculators and stair building guides.

It's not as complicated as it first appears. Typical stairs are built on a 7/12 pitch. That means for every 12 inches of run the stairs rise 7 inches.

Going the other way, measure the distance from the upper floor to the boptom floor in inches. Divide this by 7. This tells you how far out the stairs will go. If this distance exceed available space, the stairs will have to be steeper.

Be sure to check the existing codes for what is acceptable.

Correction, George:
Dividing the vertical distance in inches by 7 gives the approximate number of steps.

Round up or down to the nearest whole number of steps. Divide the number of steps into the vertical distance to get the actual rise per step.

Multiply the number of whole steps times the tread depth to get the total run distance.
