Just wondering if you can use TSP to clean carpets and if so what would be the water/solvent ratio.
Also, if it IS possible to use it on carpets, is it safe to put in a carpet cleaning machine without corroding the inside of it?

TSP is a neutral cleaner mostly used for prepping walls prior to paint...BUT is still has to be rinsed off. I would suggest no.
If you are using a DIY machine..they really will not produce the results you think they will. They are just not put together good enough to preform that way.

Bleaches and harsh chemicals are not recommended for carpet cleaning. Not all carpets are created alike. Some are solution, making color stable, some are dyed after the carpet is manufactured (greige goods) with unstable dyes. Before attempting any DIY chemical cleaning, do a test spot in inconspicuous area for ill effects on dyes. Repeated use can weaken fibers and cause fading over time.
Professional carpet cleaning is recommended. The big trucks with the hoses have enough suction to remove excess moisture that can cause mold/mildew and delamination of carpet backing. They have the ability to maintain hot enough water to disinfect and return yarn memory to twist. They also use cleaners that leave no residues that cause rapid resoiling and potential permanent staining and discoloration.

One small note concerning TSP and other powdered cleaners.TSP is not always easy to mix well enough to eliminate particles in the mix.Under normal useage this isn't always a problem especially if you rinse behind it but it would be a potential issue in something like carpet.
