Outdoor Power Equipment and Small Engines - Sears "830" Gearbox Oil

Looking for info on the oil level and weight oil for a Sears "830" rider mower (Sears Model # 502.256119) using a "Peerless" gear box. The mower was made by Murray in the early to mid 80s.

Tried the Sears parts site but no owner's manual available. The gear box has been leaking oil slowly around the gasket between the two halves of the box. Gearbox operates fine but want to test oil level/add more oil via the engine cut-out switch mounted on the top of the gearbox. Is this where oil is added?

Looking at the parts breakdown, it appears that this mower has a peerless 700 series transmission. This unit uses grease and not oil in it. Tecumseh Part No. 788067C Grease is what is recommended and can be purchased from most any Tecumseh dealer or Sears.

30yearTech - Thanks for the info. Thought it was gear oil but O.K. with the grease. Maybe that's what has been migrating past the gasket; looking like an oil leak. I'll pull the top half off and check for abundant grease. Thanks again, Mr Q
