Hi all i just recently inherited a 1970 model Snapper Comet 30. Well the engine is a 70 model briggs not sure exacly about the mower. I had to disassemble the carb to clean it out now im having trouble getting it set good. Ill get good idle but choppy running at high speeds with some black puffs or ill get fluctuating idle kinda like an over active govenor. the carb has two needles one on the float bowl and one on the top. I need a good starting point and what to adjust when and where. Thanks alot guys.

Post the engine model, type and code numbers stamped in the engine shroud just above the spark plug and someone will get you going. Have a good one. Geo

Also what would the reccomended plug type be? It has a champion J19LM now.

The screw on the top is the low speed or idle curcuit and the one on the float bowl in the main or load jet.
I usually start at 1 1/2 turns out from seat, and then fine tune.
Turning the adjustment screws in (clockwise) will lean out the mixture and opening them ( Counter Clockwise) will richen the mixture.
If your getting a rough top speed with black puffs of smoke, try slowly turning the bottom adjustment in to lean out the mixture, until the engine smooths out.
Adjust the low speed for a smooth idle, if the engine hesitates or dies when throttled, then open the low speed adjustment a little and test until a smooth idle is optained with good throttle responce. If it chugs and produces black smoke when throttled then lean the low speed adjustment some to obtain good acceleration without the cugging and smoke.
J19LM spark plug is fine or you can also use a CJ8
Hope this helps...
