Solid Hardwood, Engineered and Laminate Flooring - Old floors - how to clean, refresh

I live in a large 85 year old apartment with wood floors everywhere. The last time they were varnished was some thirty years ago. They are badly scratched, and high traffic areas have large bare spots. The landlord refuses to refinish them.

What can I do to make them look better? I'm not looking for a major project -- I've got to do this on my own. Obviously I'm not looking for perfection, either. I just want to make the floors look a bit better.

Any suggestions, no matter how unorthodox, would be most appreciated!

go get some floor stain of the same color and sheen. and put some on in a unseen area. if it looks good enough, try a different small area. if that looks good enough = have at it.

If this is a rental unit, as it sounds, you can't do anything without the landlord approving it in advance.

I am well aware of my legal rights and obligations, as I hold the lease and have read it. What I am looking for is advice on how to fix my floors. Thanks anyway.
