The previous owners of our home tiled the concrete front stoop. The tiles began to crack and chip off, so we removed all of them. This has left the surface of the stoop rough and uneven, particularly with the grout that is remaining. It looks terrible! We have had a few contractors provide estimates for repairing the stoop, but almost all of them suggested that we replace the stoop entirely (have it re-poured). We don't want to incur the expense of replacing the stoop - we only want to repair the surface. Are there any inexpensive solutions for this that we can do ourselves? Is there a way to grind down the surface, or install pavers on the surface?

you can rent a concrete surface grinder from a rental yard and grind off the old grout and get a smooth finish just be sure not to grind to deep.
