I'm looking to install a gas dryer and had a question or two I wanted to ask. First of all, is it recommended to replace the existing shut-off valve when replacing gas dryer? Second of all, the dryer directions state a 1/8" NPT plugged tapping is required. What is this, and is this a recent requirement to put on gas dryers? Thanks!

Welcome! You came to the right place to have your questions answered.

First off, changing the shut off valve is not necessary but I recommend it depending on it's overall condition. Additionally, I strongly recommend replacing and spring loaded shut off valves with the more modern 1/4 turn stainless ball style.

To answer your second question is a 1/8" NPT plugged tapping is essentially a tee with a plugged 1/8" threaded port. Although it is called a tee, it is a nipple with a drilled port. Personally, I never knew it was required but in does make sense. The purpose of this is to be able to check for proper gas pressure entering the dryer. Again, I never knew it had to be done but I've always done it in using a shut off valve with a test port. T

he importance of proper pressure is so the flame burns properly. I would be willing to bet if this dryer was hooked up with out the proper pressures it could very well void warranty. The proper pressure is generally 11 inches water column flow and 13 (or so) inches water column lock up.

These pressures are to be taken with a test gauge called a manometer.
