I have two AC units in our home, one in the basement and one in the attic. The one in the attic was leaking water from the condenser drain pipe. Both the the units have condenser drain pipes that leave the condenser and then after about 2 feet come to a joint, go up 3 inches, over 3 inches, back down 3 inches, and then continue towards the drain. What is the purpose of the pipe jogging up? My attic unit was leaking from the joint where it jogs up.

if those drains hook into the household drain pipes that might be to keep sewer gasses from comeing into the house, otherwise I don't know what possible purpose it could serve.

Yes, they are traps. Though they look a little odd to me for some reason, but that could be the angle of the pic. Sounds like they didn't glue one of the joints very well.

And I think there is supposed to be a vent somewhere around there as well, but not an HVAC guy.
