I inherited a scotts lawnmower with a 6.5 intec Briggs & stratton engine. I got it to start, but huge amounts of white smoke is coming from the muffler. :wall: Any suggestions on how to fix this problem or what it may be would greatly be appreciated!

Check your oil level, if it is over full you may have gas leaking into oil. Report back and we can advise.

If it is not over full, depending on how it was transported when you inherited it, (if it was tipped sideways towards muffler or spark plug end down) it may just be oil in the muffler that will burn off after 10 minutes with no harm to engine.

Is the engine racing? Does the oil smell like gas? If not, and the level is not over the line, I'd say it has either a blown head gasket (if it's an OHV engine) or bad rings and/or cylinder walls.

Well i just went out to check. The engine is not racing ,but the oil does smell like gas and it is an ohv .

Ok, if the oil does in fact smell like gas, it is probably thinned to the point that it is getting into the cylinder and causing the smoke. The gas in the oil is due to a leaking carburetor. You'll want to remove the float and needle, and at least clean the needle and seat, and maybe replace the needle if it is rubber tipped, and the seat if the needle is metal tipped.

...and of course you'll want to change the oil with fresh SAE30 when you fix the carb.
