Are there such a thing? I have a 2 story foyer with 2 double hung windows. These windows face west and on a sunny summer afternoon the sun coming in those window heats up the foyer and the heat travels right up the stairway to the second floor bedrooms and it also heats up the living room.
I'd like to install darkening shades in the windows but they'd have to be remotely operated and powered by battery as there is no electricity near these windows.

Yes, there's such a thing. Look for "motorized blinds." You should be able to get them from anybody or any place that sells blinds.
Depending on the size and style, it could run at least a couple hundred and up, for each one.

We have a 2-story foyer with a large window with a curved top. We bought a rolom darkening roller shade with continuous cord loop at IKEA. Then we ordered 25ft. of plastic beaded chain online. We needed a long loop because the shade had to be operated by the first floor. A much cheaper option than remote controlled shades or blinds. Total cost of project was approximately $50. I think that's a much better deal than $200 or $300! Hope this helped..
