Outdoor Power Equipment and Small Engines - JD tsr 22 snowthrower problem

hi all
newbe to this forum
i finely own a john deere something:D
in this case a snow thrower model tsr 22
just picked it up at a sale
only problem with it is the gear shift is stuck in one speed
i have took the bottom plate off and tried oiling
everything under there but still is stuck
the snow thrower was sitting for two years
and surprising she started up and does runs good
after i cleaning out the gas tank,replaced the fuel line and plug and changed the oil
any help?

I do not have a diagram of your machine, but I will try to steer you in right direction.

The speed is controled but a rubber friction disk that slides across a steel speed disk. The closer to the center, the lower speed. By squeezing the auger lever these 2 disks make contact. Chances are they are engaged (touching), thus not allowing the friction disk to slide. It usually has a hex shaped shaft through the center which needs to be greased. There is always a way to adjust the difference in the distance between speed disk and friction plate. Look to see if they are engaged (touching) if so it will just be a matter of adjusting. Post back if they are engaged.

and yes it's engaged and won't go to any other speeds or reverse

i have greased everthing under there and got it to shift from 2 to 6 speeds easily but it won't go to 1 or reverse
if i force it to 1 , it will get stuck

The friction wheel needs to be adjusted.

it was the rubber wheel that was rusted on the hex shaft and wouldn't move
i had to sand the rust off and grease the hex shaft
after a few taps, it moved freely:thumbup:
machine works good now and for 15 bucks i can't go wrong
