We've finally gotten an offer accepted in SD. So now that we're in the process of getting the home, when we settle, we're going to want to make it our own.
We are completely new to San Diego. Does anyone have any suggestions on where we can find out about good painters and other residential remodel contractors?

Just have to ask...
Why SanDog? And where did you move from? I know the weather is nice...but man its expensive!
Anyway....same as everywhere else. References, time in business, work from office or a van (depending on the size of the company), insurance, license, workmans comp. Ask for copies. Written complete quotes. Check for BBB complaints. Minimum 3 quotes for any job.

Since I'm a painter, I'll address that part :D
Your local paint store [not dept] can give you a list of painting contractors who have been in business awhile and seem to have satisfied customers. Always check references!!!
Friends, neighbors, people at work/church can also be source of good contractor info.
The contractors that have been in business awhile, have insurance and any type of overhead will cost more but if you do business with an uninsured, unlicensed contractor you are taking a bit of a risk.

Gun Guy gives good advice. My cousin lives in San Diego and had a hard time finding contractors since she was from out of state and had no references from friends, neighbors etc. to go on. Then whatever you do, dont automatically go for the low bid. Invite 4 people, ask questions, and generally let how you feel about them decide. If you have a middle two bidders, they arent lying to you on price. Who makes you comfortable - piece of mind goes a long way.
