Flooring Tile - Removing ceramic tile

I really have disliked my "white" kitchen ceramic tile floor. It is smooth surfaced type ceramic tile. Once it is mopped, it gets dirty in minutes. I want to change it out. I don't know if it is possible to resurface a floor tile or if it would just need to be removed then another tile layed.
Removing sounds like a very tedious/messy job.
If it would need to be removed, is there any product out there that can be rented to make removal easier?

Hi Judy!

Big box stores have floor tile remover machine (actual name is elluding me....)that can take that up in no time if you have a larger area. Also, a chisel, hammer, etc will bust all that up.

I would just go at it with a hammer, cold chisel, and prybar. Just tap under the tile with the hammer and cold chisel, and it should pop up.

A demolition hammer like a Hilti would work, can be rented as noted above, get a 2" spade for it. If the tile are set properly, they wont come up easily, also depends on what is under the tile - cement board, slab or plywood.
