I've been using Behr's Smooth Texture paint to create a venetian plaster effect throughout my house. The actual Ventian Plaster product strains my budget by quite a bit, so I trowel the texture paint on in two thin coats to achieve a subtle effect, as opposed to more obvious texturizing. My dilemma is that I discovered yesterday that my local home improvement store will no longer be carrying the texture paint. Can I use joint compound to achive the same, subtle "plaster" look, or is there another similar product to Behr's out there with the smoothness for which I'm looking?

Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated!
