Spiders are carnivores, feeding on bugs. This is a good thing, but spiders can be scarey, and some have dangerously poisonous bites.
The occasional spider that wanders into the home will soon die of starvation if there are no bugs to eat. Thus, exclusion of both insects and spiders is important. Doors and windows should seal properly. Weatherstripping is important for exclusion of spiders and insects as well as energy conservation.
A residual insecticide spray about once a month along baseboards and around doors and windows on the interior can be DIY or professionally done. Regular vacuuming and high and low dusting with dusting wand to make sure webs do no accumulate along ceiling, in corners, and along baseboards, toe kick areas, etc. are also important control measures. Occasionally moving furniture and cleaning beneath and behind are also helpful. Eliminate clutter and potential hiding places for spiders. Never stick your hand into an area that you cannot see. When cleaning garage and outbuildings, wear gloves for protection. If fear of spiders prevent inspection of crawl space, hire a professional.
On the exterior, a monthly perimeter residual insecticide treatment along foundation and around windows and doors is important. Keeping in mind that spiders are carnivores, they are attracted to insects that are attracted to porch lights and lighted windows at night. Minimizing and limiting the amount of exterior lighting and using broom to knock down webs that collect around exterior of doors and windows are also helpful.

A product called Bug Stop has worked really well for me. I got it at Walmart and have seen it in other stores. Just be careful when you spray up around doors or other places above your head that you step back so the spray doesn't fall back in your face as it did mine the first time! I am squeamish about pesticides but the influx of spiders overcame that. I have sprayed it selectively in a few corners in my house but primarily around my bedroom windows and french doors where the light at night attracts the bugs and spiders. It really works.
