I picked up a really nice old door. The problem is it's rather ornate and most of the varnish wore off a long time ago. The guy I got the door from said he had it stored in an old barn.
I've tried sanding it. I tried soap and water and a scraper. I still can't get it out. Is there some sort of product I can use on fairly raw wood to get it clean enough to refinish???

Where do you live?? Old doors look realy neat, but they have the energy efficiency of a seive, and are hard to make energy efficient. Before you spend too much time/money on that door, consider where it will be used.

You might try denatured alcohol. it works decent for removing marks on new wood. I've never tried it on old.

You might also try TSP (trisodium phosphate), available at any good paint store.

Read the instructions for use on the box.
