I want to install a door in a 36 in frame, but want the most room to enter and exit. Would a bifold door be better than a single panel solid door?

A bifold door, even when fully open will take up about 2" of the total opening, depending on the panels...could be even more. A swing type door will do the same if it has to open against a wall at 90 degrees to the opening. If the swing door can open fully, then it should not impact the opening at all, although it requires door stop, which is about 3/8" (x 2, need it all around the door).

If the door is in a corner, one could put a set of swing clear offset door hinges on a hinged door, so that when it swings open 90 degrees, it doesn't block any of the opening. They're often used for those who need handicapped accessibility where that extra 1 1/2" or so is important.

A 36 inch door would have about 35" clear between the door stops, provided the slab swings clear. Bifolds would always be a little less, so they are not better at giving you a wider opening.
