Would anyone recommend tileing an entire staircase ? The staircase is now carpeted and a friend is thinking of tileing it now. I think wood would be better than tile.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No expert, but I can't imagine you could ever get it stiff enuf to prevent cracking. And what about the nosing?
If he likes fancy go with oak and a fancy runner with the retainer bars (or whatever they're called).

The noseing I am thinking of capping it with oak and returning it to the tiled riser and also butting it against the tread a bit, with the tile on the tread butting up to it, almost like capping it off.
It seems like alot of work. If the stairs are not framed in properly it will fail no matter what you do.The carpet is still on so I cant see how its constructed yet either.
I think wood is the way to go, because of it leading into a basement & at least it will all expand and contract together. Like you said how do you get it strong enough to last through traffic and time also without cementing it like they used too.
