Doors and Windows - am i screwed? trying to replace steel cased putty window

first off, first post glad i found this website, been wanting to to alot of different things to my house and this is a good place to start.

but now the bad news...

so my house was broken into and they broke one of windows on my steel case window. its one with 20 different pieces of window and they broke one window

so i got all of the glass out and was trying to scrape out the putty when this happened

was this part that came off supposed to be steel? because its just wood

so do i have any options other than replacing the entire window?

Is it wood or just rusted steel? Looks more like rust to me.

Who ever thought steel windows were a good idea?

I'd say finish cleaning it out, then use a wirebrush to get the loose rust off (if thats what it is). Use a rust converter, let it cure and re-install new glass.

Hmm wait, are we talking about the area where the holes are, or the areas still under the paint?

Never saw a wood divide in a steel casement. I agree that what you have is just paint or filler. Prime the steel, install the new glas, putty, paint the putty after dry(several weeks).

ok i guess the pictures seem a little confusing

so what i was referring to is where it is paint then the steel part and then paint again

well that paint is actually the wood part of the frame that would provide the quarter inch opening to support the glass

or i could be really confused and the part that came off is just putty

im new to all of this so is there not supposed to be anything there making that quarter inch gap when you are installing the replacement window?

as for the little hole i dont know what that is, here is a large picture showing what the window looks like

so when you say prime the steel what do you mean exactly?

A metal primer to seal it against rust. It won't actually, but it will slow rust better than unprotected steel.

Clean all the putty, measure the opening, deduct 1/8" in W & H for the actual size of the glass. Use 1/8" window glass in steel casement windows. Prepare the rusted part of the steel as explained in the previous posts. Put a bead of latex caulk around the lip and set the glass against it and then use Dap glazing compound to seal the glass to the frame.

Great pictures! I'm getting ready to replace my windows and had no idea that the glass is puttied into place. Btw you must seriously live down the street from me. I have a Hoffman built brick house also, on actual Hoffman street :)
