I'm starting to do my research for solar sun screens. Any tips or advise...

I get to enjoy the Texas sun and heat so I'm considering screens as an option to save electricity.

I've got about 14 windows that are 36" x 72" and a sliding glass door with a screen.

Anybody done this type of work? Is it quick quick? Cost effective or just let someone else to the work???

Thanks.

It not that hard. I did all 12 of my windows. On the larger ones, such as the ones you mention. You should use a center brace. All the tools needed, can be bought from the same place you get the screen. Follow the instructions, and take your time.

waterwelldude,

Thanks for the reply. If I may ask you a follow up question... Where did you buy the hardware? Lowes / Home depot / online someplace?

Any general feel on your $ savings vs having someone else do it? Somewhere I came up with costs of about 65 a window for the size windows I'm looking at.

Now I just have to ask you a separate question about your name. I'm guessing you drill water wells? Interestingly enough a co-worker and I were talking about drilling our own water well in our back yard (http://howtodrillawell.com) and trying to come up with a way to use it for geothermal energy to cool the house / water the yard? Do you by chance have any experience with this or some other place to do some research?

Many thanks.

I got some of the parts both box stores. The price worked out to 25.oo each. I did 13 windows. Most of my windows are 48x60ish. I have no idea how much it cost for someone else to do it. The way I see it. If another person can do something, so can I. Thats just me.:D

What part of the country do you live? A well for watering your grass may not be a problem, but using it for heat or cold could be a different story. I live on the coast in south east Texas. The water comes out of the ground at 72 degrees year round. It may not be feasible to use the water for heating or cooling where you are. There is lots of well info. in the Water Well and Septic forum, on doing just what you want to do. Use the search bar to look for the info you are looking for. There are a few people that have dug there own well ,that should be able to help you.

Thanks for the info on the screens. Will have to look into it a bit more. Maybe this weekend I’ll run by the stores to see what they have to offer.

I agree with the idea of "if they can do it then so can I" or "why should I pay someone else to do it when I can do it", plus you get more experience and tools out of it. :)

I'm your next door neighbor! I'm in Houston. You answered one of my questions, ground water temp in this area of the US. Thanks for the boards to check out. I'll have to go read through some post over there. I'm still in research mode but I figure fall/winter is around the corner which is a great time for working outside if I think I can do this project?

Thanks for all your tips.
